About 8 or 9 years ago (the time’s a little fuzzy), I took down the blog that used to live on this website.
I look back to recall why I did it, and the only thing I remember is a sense of relief after realizing I didn’t have to post anything to it anymore. I had a self-imposed pressure to write content and would feel guilty whenever I would go long stretches without posting anything.
It just wasn’t fun anymore and felt like a burden, so I decided to archive it away and move on.
That’s a good question. I think the simplest answer is that I needed a project to occupy my mind during the days of COVID-19, but that's not the only reason.
Back in 2016 and 2017, I quit Facebook and Twitter, respectively. In this past year, I also gave up Instagram. It was the madness and insanity around the last two US presidential elections that motivated me to quit social media. I do miss some of those connections (thinking of you, Ace the German Shepherd), but I don't regret quitting. Sadly, the unfortunate side-effect of that is that I'm a bit cut-off from everyone.
Because I lack a proper outlet on the Internet to connect with people I don't already know, I decided to go old school and build a new blog. I take pleasure in hosting my own website and would prefer to make my content available here without having to go through Facebook or some other platform.
I have some ideas about the content I'd like to post on this blog.
- I can definitively say, right now, that I will not use this space like social media, which means comments are permanently banned. Email is the preferred method to provide feedback.
- I don’t intend to post anything political. I don’t care about your political beliefs, so why should I believe that you would care about mine? The world is a better place when people keep politics and religion to themselves.
- I’ve done a lot of genealogy research about my family, and would like to get some of it out on the Internet. There are some interesting stories to share, and I’d like to publish a family tree. This web site gives me a place to do all that.
- I enjoy thinking and writing about technology, including topics around cloud services, networking, servers, automation, etc. I’ll be documenting some of my tech projects, as well.
In the meantime, I’m going to work on the theme, layout, backend, and presentation services. Once I have things settled, I’ll write up how I chose to serve this site on the Internet.
